Gene Zwickey, 86, died of complications from a stomach tumor, August 22, 2013 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. He was born May 4, 1927 in North St. Paul to Carroll and Cecil Zwickey. Gene graduated from high school there and enlisted in the Navy in 1945. Afterwards, he attended and graduated from Macalester College. Gene began his teaching career teaching mathematics in Barnum. While there, he met his future wife, R. Elaine Vitalis. Gene began teaching in Moose Lake in 1951 and they married in 1952. He later went on to receive a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. During the summer months, they ran the Gene-Elaine Drive-In from 1954-1971. He had other hobbies, such as rebuilding an airplane (Gertrude), and got his pilot’s license. He loved flying family and friends around the area. In 1987 he set his sights on sailing, and began building a sailboat (Alpha to Omega) in the backyard of his home. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family on Lake Superior. He and his wife took part in more than 120 Volksmarches and attended 42 Elderhostels in the U.S. and Europe. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church. Gene enjoyed playing cards, going to Florida during the winter, dancing, going to movies, attending concerts, and just listening to music.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanne; brother, Jim.
Gene is survived by Elaine (his wife of 61years); 3 children, Todd (Dana), Jan, and Tim (Michele); 5 grandchildren, Adrienne, Greta (Jeff), Karyn, Peter, and Caitlin; 5 step-grandchildren, Clinton, Alex, Eric, Emilie, and Lexie.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 25 from 5 to 7 P.M. in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and will continue Monday, August 26 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Service in Hope Lutheran Church, Moose Lake.
