Edwin L. VanVlack, Jr., age 86, of 215 Stuntz Avenue, Ashland, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.
Ed was born, on February 12, 1922, in Ashland, the son of Edwin L., Sr. and Ida C. (Kirkman) VanVlack. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran. He and Carol J. (Kalen) Cliff were united in marriage, on August 5, 1967, in Washburn, Wisconsin. For 48 years, he owned and operated Ed’s Safari Bar, on Main Street, in Ashland. He enjoyed his work, as a bartender, and the many friends he made over the years because of it. He was an avid sports fan (especially watching the Packers) and as a pastime, enjoyed playing the lottery.
Survivors include: Carol, his wife of 40 years; their two daughters: Sandra Castle and her husband, Curtis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Lisa Sturgal and her husband, Michael, of Ashland; and one son, Mike VanVlack, of Ashland. Other survivors include: four grandsons: Steven Castle and his wife, Lee; Jeffrey Castle and his wife, Janeen; James Sturgal and Tyler VanVlack; three great grandchildren: Bradly Castle, Sophia Castle and Hailee Cstle; one sister, Virginia Burns, of Ashland; numerous nieces and Nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers: Sherman, Fred, Keith and Tom; and five sisters: Florence, Catherine, Veronica, Betty Ann and Bonnie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Henry V. Willenborg, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. Casket bearers will include: Jeffrey Castle, Michael Sturgal, Peter Warren, Curtis Castle, Steven Castle and Will Keyes.
Interment will follow, in the Saint Agnes Cemetery, featuring military honors, by the United Chequamegon Area Veterans, of Ashland.
Visitation will begin, at the Church, in Ashland, at 10 a.m., Friday and continue until the hour of the service.
