John J. “Jiggs” Daniels Jr., 85, of South Baptist Street, Newport, RI died Friday August 9, 2013. Born July 5, 1928 in Newport, he was the son of the late John J. Daniels Sr. and May Joseph Cordoso. John was married to late Valborg Alexia Hetland for 16 years.
While in high school, he started driving his own cab and went on to become a supervisor at Avica Corporation in Middletown until its closure. NASA made their used parts at Avica Corporation. In the 1960’s, Jiggs traveled to Cape Canaveral to watch one of the rockets lift off. An avid jazz fan, he enjoyed attending weekly live jazz events on the island. He was a member of The Loyal Order of Moose, The Idle Hour Club, and a frequent guest of the Elks and Kiwanis Clubs.
Survived by his four children; Mark Daniels of Attleboro, MA, Lisa Daniels Batley of Ohio, David Daniels of New Hampshire and Lynn Daniels Mullin of Las Vegas. He leaves five grandchildren; Roger Daniels, Carissa Daniels, Jared Daniels, Nicole Angel and Kia Lynn O’Connell.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, from 3-6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday August 19, 2013 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport at 9am. Burial will be private.
