U.S. Veteran

William “Bill” Earl Foust, 82, of Beulah, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 29, 1931, in Detroit, the son of William and Marie (Buhl) Foust.

William graduated from Michigan State University in 1953. Afterwards he served in the US ARMY until being honorably discharged in December of 1955. William then went back to MSU where he earned his master’s degree in public administration. William was a principal for Birmingham Elementary Schools for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. While in Birmingham, William was instrumental in the development of the Birmingham Environmental Center.

Since he was a child, William had been coming to Platte Lake spending time in the cottage his father built. After retiring, William moved to Platte Lake and renovated the cottage. An artist and craftsman, he loved carving, woodworking and photography, participating in art shows for over 20 years. Most of all, William had a passion for the outdoors and loved spending time on his property, whether it was hunting, fishing, farming the orchard, making maple syrup or using his sawmill.

William is survived by his wife of 40 years, Nancy Ruth Foust; his son, William Todd Foust; 2 nieces, Anne (Robb) Glenny, and Beth (Brian) Kasson; 2 nephews, Peter (Cindy) Haubold, and Fred (Bridget) Haubold; and several great-nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Elaine Haubold.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 2, 2013, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, with Dr. Paul Hammer officiating. Interment will follow in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home.
