John Leo

John Leo "Jack" HAIGH October 9, 1929 - July 22, 2013

Jack was born in Seattle, the oldest of fifteen children raised by Leo and Ethel Haigh. His early life was shaped by being part of a large, loving family, by his faith, and by adopting the strong work ethic people of that era needed to get by.

He was a graduate of Seattle Prep ('47) and earned his BS in Industrial Engineering from Seattle University in 1953. After service in the U.S. Army, and civilian work for Chrysler as a tank field engineer in California, he returned to Seattle to use his G.I. Bill benefits, taking graduate management courses at the University of Washington in the Fall of 1957. It was there he met his future wife, Fran, who was an undergraduate. They married in April 1959, and bought a lot in Houghton, Washington to build their first home. They liked it so much they never left. Jack's four sons and, later, his two grandsons, all have fond memories of spending time with Jack at that home.

Jack was a Plant Safety Engineer for Boeing throughout the 1960's and early 1970's. Then, in 1971, he began his defining work and 25-years service to the Seattle Fire Department as their first Fire Protection Engineer. He retired from SFD in 1996, but wouldn't stay "retired" for long. He worked in a similar capacity for the Bellevue Fire Department; and then did part-time project review for Seattle's Department of Planning and Development, leaving this work reluctantly when the economy soured and building activity ground to a halt. Jack had few hobbies, and spent most of his free time with his family.

Jack is survived by his wife, Fran, and their four sons; Bruce, Joseph (Madeline), Paul (Janice) and Robert; and by grandsons Samuel and Zachary. Also surviving Jack are three of his brothers, Phil Haigh; Ray (Connie) Haigh; and Greg (Sonja) Haigh, and all five of his sisters, Helen Haigh, CSJP; Tess Haigh; Bea (Dick) Byland; Rose (Don) Obuchowski; and Geri (Lynn) Walker. He will also be missed by sister-in-law, Lucy Haigh; brother-in-law, Quillin McHarg, and by his many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends too numerous to list here. Preceding Jack were his parents, Leo and Ethel Haigh, and six brothers: Steve, Dan, Bill, Jim, Larry and, just this past June, David Haigh.

Funeral Mass for Jack will be celebrated Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Assumption Catholic Church, 6201 33rd AVE NE, Seattle.

The family requests that, in remembrances, please consider making a donation in Jack's name to Gonzaga University, Reverend Clifford Kossel Fund, 502 E. Boone Avenue, Spokane, WA 99258-0098. The late Father Kossel was Jack's cousin, and a friend, throughout their lives.
