Provost Kenneth

Kenneth J. Provost, age 83, passed away on July 22, 2013, in his Ashland, Wisconsin, home.

Ken was born on February 13, 1930, in Mason, Wisconsin, the son of Peter P. and Anna (Pfeffer) Provost. He graduated from Drummond High School in 1948, and began working for L.E. Meyers Company, Farm Equipment Sales and Buchli Enterprises.

He and Patricia M. Greene were united in marriage, at the Saint Agnes Catholic Church, in Ashland, on June 7, 1958.

In 1960 he began his banking career with the Union National Bank in Ashland. In 1961 he completed the short course in central banking at the Federal Reserve in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in 1967 he completed the basic managerial accounting class at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1970, he was named president of the local chapter of the Bank Administration Institute. He graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, in 1975, and in 1982 he became President of the Union National Bank, in Ashland. He later joined Associated Bank and retired from his banking career in 1994. He was also engaged in securities sales for Coordinated Capital Securities, in Madison.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland. He was very active in community affairs and fundraising events. He was treasurer of the Salvation Army, for over 25 years, president of the Ashland Jaycees, treasurer of the Ashland Foundation, president of the Kiwanis Club, treasurer of the Lake Superior Council of Boy Scouts and president of the Ashland Area Industrial Development Corporation. He was a member of the Ashland Elks, president of the Saint Agnes Cemetery Association and Consolidated School Fund and did fund- raising for Northland College, FEMA, Crop Walk for Hunger, Handicapped Children’s Fund and Wisconsin Association of Retarded Children and many more.

He was a true patriot who loved his country and flew the American Flag every day he was able. He loved fishing, golfing, hunting, gardening, traveling and cross-country skiing and he was an avid sports fan. First and foremost, he treasured his family and enjoyed tremendously the special gift of being a grandfather to his three beautiful grandchildren.

Survivors include: Pat, his wife of 55 years, of Ashland; two daughters, Heidi Provost, of Ashland; and Robin (Michael) Birt, of Madison; his son, Scott of Portage, Wisconsin; three grandchildren: Olivia and Ava Birt and Kenny Provost; three sisters: Patricia Carignan, of Minneapolis; Elizabeth O’Keefe, of Saint Paul, Minnesota; and Sister Gertrude Provost, of the Medical Missions, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kenneth is also survived by: his brother-in-law, Robert (Marian) Greene of DeForest and sisters-in-law: Margie Raichle, of Appleton, Wisconsin; and Carol Greene, of Mesa, Arizona; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers: Robert and Walter; sister, Frances; brothers-in-law: Earl Carignan, Robert O’Keefe, Fred Raichle and Thomas Greene.

A gathering, for family and friends, will be held at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland, beginning at 10 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2013, and continuing until the time of service.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, for Ken, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2013, at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, in Ashland. Father Edward McKenzie, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant.

His interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be made to several selected charities.

Ken’s family would like to thank: Regional Hospice, friends and neighbors for all the wonderful support during this very difficult time.

Our Ashland Chapel will be assisting Ken’s family with his memorialization.
