Betty M. Baber, 89, died Friday, July 19th, 2013 at Oceanside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a 10 week battle with pneumonia following hip replacement surgery. Born in Augusta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Lillian Mae Reeves Ward and wife of the late Maurice E. Baber. Betty and Maurice, her husband of 50 years, both loved to dance and Betty always said they danced 6 nights a week and wondered what to do on the 7th. Betty worked 10 years as the Office Manager at J.B. Whites Department Store in Augusta before retiring to travel with Maurice, a jeweler who worked the Southeast area. They retired to Tybee in the late 80’s. Betty and Maurice loved Tybee as they had spent many a vacation there. After Maurice’s death in 1998, Betty spent the next 10 years taking care of their son, the late Michael Baber and raising their granddaughter, Gabrielle. Although she had become more frail the last several years, Betty loved her coffee, cigarettes, crossword puzzles, the cook shows (as she called them), Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Let’s make a Deal and the Brit Coms. Betty especially loved the grouper fingers and spuds from Spankys.
She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Baber of Tybee Island and Pamela B. Coffer (Tom) of Savannah, GA; granddaughter Gabrielle Baber of Columbia, SC; sister Ann Bambach (Henry) of New York; friends Raynette Evans, of Tybee Island, Lynn Cowart of Tybee Island, Debbie Sheridan of Townsend, GA, Rosemerry Lacefield of Tybee Island and several nieces and nephews. Her cat, Molly, misses her terribly. Betty is again dancing with Maurice.
Graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, GA. Susan Hill of All Saints Episcopal Church, Tybee Island will officiate. The family would like to especially thank the LPN’s and CNA’s on the West wing at Oceanside Nursing and Rehab Center and Hospice Advantage for all of their kindness in our time of need.
