James B. Oakes
Chatham……….James Barrette Oakes, age 95 of 5761 Cooksburg Road, Chatham died Saturday, July 13, 2013 at his residence. Born October 7, 1917 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Rev. James Henry Oakes and Nora Mattox Oakes. He was predeceased by three brothers, Bennett Oakes, Ray Oakes and Samuel Oakes; two sisters, Doris Grizzel and Ruby Carter. He was a member of Museville Christian Church where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Treasurer and taught the Adult Sunday School Class for over 40 years. Mr. Oakes was a World War II veteran and was a member and former Chaplain of Penhook VFW Post 10840. He was a retired employee of Klopman and enjoyed gardening and bowling. He is survived by his wife of over 74 years, Elise Kendrick Oakes of the residence; one son, Dexter Oakes of the residence; one brother, Edward Oakes and wife, Irene of Chatham; two sisters, Clarice Oakes of Chatham and Lois Ann Stegall of Hurt; two sisters-in-law, Octavia Oakes of Chatham and Lena Oakes of Penhook; one grandson, Brian Keith Oakes and wife, Lynn of Kernersville, NC and a great-grandson, Everette Paul Oakes. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 15, 2013 at Museville Christian Church by Steve Hayes, Minister and Ted Clifton, Minister. Burial with Military Honors by the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013 at Museville Christian Church and other times will be at the residence.
