Raymond F. Bender

Raymond F. ‘Duke’ Bender “Little Hunter” age 72, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Duke was born, on January 25, 1939, in Odanah, Wisconsin, the son of Vincent J. and Beatrice (Arbuckle) Bender.

Duke attended Haskell Indian School and graduated from West Division High School, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He served his apprenticeship for tool and die making and worked as a tool and die maker at Harnish-Vager Company, Capital Engineering and Whitebird, Inc., before retiring in 2001. He enjoyed: hunting, fishing, gathering, playing the guitar, archery, spoon playing and the stump fiddle. Time well spent for Duke was with his family, whom he loved very much, and his friends.

Survivors include his life- long partner of 32 years, Monica Boutin, of Ashland; children: Mark R. Bender, of Odanah; Scott V. (Tracy) Bender, of Odanah; Lori A. Bender, of Milwaukee; Lynn A. Bender, of Milwaukee; and Donna Rae (Stanley) Fredrickson, of Baraga, Michigan; and ten grandchildren: Brandon, Justin, Donelle, Scott, Jr., Gary, Desiree, Cailin, Joanna, Breanna and Chase. Survivors also include: one great-granddaughter, Londynn Rae; two brothers: Robert (Janet) and Anthony Bender, all of Odanah; three sisters: Carole (Glenn) Kraft, Barbara (Jack) Kraft, and Kathleen (William) Ashmun, all of Odanah; a special friend: Jim Mattson, of MilleLacs, Minnesota; a very special nephew, Paulie ‘Potato’ of Ashland; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Duke was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers: Donald and John Henry Bender; and one sister, Rosemary.

A visitation, for family and friends, will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, September 30, 2011, and will feature a 7 p.m. prayer service.

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Raymond, will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2011, at the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, in Odanah. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M., will be the Celebrant. The casket bearers will include: Brandon Bender, Paulie Vitato, Jim Nattson, Paul Kraft, Kenneth Boulley, Vincent Bender, David Moore, and Scott Bender, Jr.

Interment, in the Bad River Cemetery, Odanah, will immediately follow the Mass.

Our Ashland Chapel will be assisting Raymond's family with his memorialization.
