Kenneth Lester Bowden, 78, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Friday, July 12, 2013, at DeKalb County Rehab & Nursing Center, DeKalb.
Born May 17, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Lester D. and Eleanor M. (Kenison) Bowden, Ken married Audrey Sue Pearson on August 23, 1964, in Berkley, California.
A graduate of Wheaton Academy, Ken obtained his bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University and master’s from University of Michigan. He was a professor in NIU’s Geography Department for 30 years. In retirement, he continued to teach at Waubonsee College and at Elderhostels about the Mississippi River.
Ken was a charter member and past president of the American Water Resources Association. He also served on the Presidential Advisory Committee for Water Resources in Washington, D.C. He organized many field trips to study forestry and earth sciences in Colorado. Ken helped write the grant for the formation of Russell Woods Resource Center in Genoa and led the education program.
In his spare time, Ken established an eBay business selling commemorative stamp pins all over the world; he was known as “The Pinman.” He is survived by his wife, Audrey; son, Eric D. Bowden of Chicago; sister, Bette Hopkins of California; and special nephew, godson and friend, David Barrows of Geneva.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Ruth Barrows.
The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, First Lutheran Church, 324 North Third Street, DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt officiating. Cremation is by Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
