Joseph F. Croteau

Joseph F. Croteau, Jr., age 84, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013, in his Ashland, Wisconsin home, with his loving family near his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Joe was born on July 3, 1929, in Ashland, the son of Joseph F. Sr. and Agnes (Flynn) Croteau. He was a member of the 1947 graduating class of Ashland’s DePadua High School. He and Helen J. Matyas were united in marriage, in Ashland, on Sept 27, 1952. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 10 years. He then became an Ashland County Deputy Sheriff, for two years; after which he was under sheriff for four years. He then became Ashland County Sheriff, and served for over ten years; and finally worked for the Ashland County Highway Department, retiring after 14 years. He was an avid deer hunter, loved to travel, especially around the county he loved, Ashland County. He was a huge baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Price is Right.

Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Helen, of Ashland; his sons: Edward (Tammi), of Saint Cloud, Minnesota; and Joseph D. (Mindy), of Ashland; and daughters: Lynn Marie O’Connell, of Ashland; and Micheile (Scott) Ujke, of Glendale, Arizona. He is also survived by: ten grandchildren: Shawn and Chris O’Connell, Kayla and Sierra Ujke, Caleb and James Croteau, Shannon, Sean, Justin and Jason; six great-grandchildren: Daniel and Cian O’Connell; and Sophie, Addison, Ethan and Logan; his brother, Gary (Eleanor), of Ashland; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: one son, Joseph; his parents; five sisters; and four brothers.

A gathering, for family and friends, will be held at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland, beginning at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013, and continuing until the hour of service.

A Memorial Service for Joe will be held at 12 Noon, Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the Mountain Funeral Home, in Ashland. Father Paul Paré, O.F.M., will officiate.

Interment will take place in Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland.

Memorials are preferred, in lieu of flowers, to Regional Hospice of Ashland.

Our Ashland Chapel will be assisting his family with his memorialization.
