Ann Elizabeth Brewster, age 80, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, July 1, 2013 at her home in Fremont with John, her loving husband of 62 years, and daughter Laurie by her side. Ann was born on September 15, 1932 in Lansing to Glenn L. and Evelyn N. (Richards) Ricks. Ann received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in early childhood development from the University of Michigan. Ann worked as a schoolteacher in the rural school system and White Cloud Public Schools for many years. After retirement she worked as an adjunct faculty member and then Director of Counseling Services at Jordan College. She also maintained a private counseling/life-coaching practice through which she helped many individuals and families. Ann frequently appeared as speaker, presenter, consultant or facilitator for various organizations. She held numerous volunteer positions and served many board memberships including Newaygo County Community Mental Health and WISE. She was a Certified Lay Minister of the United Methodist Church. Her love of singing and acting led her to many years of involvement in the Community Choir and Stage Door Players. Ann was a passionate advocate for the rights of children and the mentally ill and a great lover and supporter of the arts. She was a talented singer and painter. She loved dancing, picking wildflowers, long walks, Lake Michigan and big hats. She whistled like a bird and was happiest surrounded by her adoring and ever-growing family.
She is survived by her husband: John, siblings: Don (Joanne) Ricks, Mary (Dick) Haas, and David (Lynn) Ricks; children: Mary Kay (Marc) DelMariani, Laurie Orban, Thomas (Janet) Brewster, Kathe Scott, and Cynthia Pyle; grandchildren: Ann, Cari, Katie, Nikki, Allie, Ellie, Jake, Sophie, and Lena; and 6 great-grandchildren.
