Phillip Emerson Blakely “Wasabiz”, 70, of Walker passed away Wednesday, June 26, at his home at Highland Apartments.
Phillip was born December 28, 1942 in Cass Lake, Minnesota to Simon and Rachel (Sailor) Blakely, Sr. He attended school at Pine Point and Park Rapids before enlisting in the United States Navy. During his time in the service he travelled worldwide and made many memories training as a Navy Seal. After being honorably discharged he lived and worked in the southern part of the United States. He moved back north in 1984, living in Cass Lake, Duluth, and then Walker in 2011.
Phillip was a jokester and big tease, and will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his great stories, his persistence, and his love of animals. He enjoyed dancing and travelling the pow-wow circuit and spending time at the casino. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Phillip is survived by his sister Linda (Dale) Niemi, wife Peggy “Opichi”, children; Anissa (John) Geltmacher, Christopher Erickson, Rechinda (James) Coughlin, Emelie Rivera, Grandchildren; Jarryd Rivera, Megan Rivera, Duncan Geltmacher, Declan Geltmacher, Aiden Coughlin, James Coughlin, Lindsey Coughlin, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other special family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Norman Blakely, Simon Blakely Jr., sister Betty Blakely, and nephew Duane.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Veterans Memorial Building, Cass Lake with Melvin Goodman as Spiritual Leader. Interment will be at the Northern Gospel Mission Cemetery. The Wake will begin Saturday, June 29 at 7:00 pm and run until time of service.
