Donald F. Atkinson, 88, of Chippewa Falls, died Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
He was born June 14, 1925 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Myron and Amie (Talbott) Atkinson. On April 8, 1947 he married Gloria J. Peterson at Notre Dame Church in Chippewa Falls.
Don served in the U.S. Army where he received a Purple Heart. He owned and operated Don’s Disposal Service and retired from Johnson Manufacturing. He also drove bus for the disabled.
He was a member of Notre Dame Church and a lifetime member of both the Moose Lodge #246 where he was Past Governor and VFW Post #1038.
Don is survived by one son, Don (Elaine) of Chippewa Falls; six daughters, Mary (Michael) Schneider of Arkansaw, Barbara (William) Rogers and Judi Roy both of Fort Myers, Fla., Rita (James) Hurt of Tilden, Debra Hughes of Gilman and Rhonda (Barry) Fisher of Chippewa Falls; two sisters, Phyllis Broughton and Lori Atkinson both of Minnesota; 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria on March 8, 1998; his parents; three brothers, Walter, Arlo and Lee Atkinson; one sister, Wilma; one grandson, Michael Schneider; one granddaughter, Michelle Moore in infancy; and one brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Stan Broughton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28 at Notre Dame Church in Chippewa Falls. Rev. Msgr. Mark Pierce will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Entombment will be in Hope Mausoleum in Chippewa Falls. Military rites will be conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 27 and until 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Horan Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls. There will be a Christian Vigil Service at 6 p.m. and a Moose ritual at 7 p.m. both on Thursday at the funeral home.
