U.S. Veteran

Bud Welch age 87 of Brown City died Sunday June 16, 2013. He was born Stephen Herbert Welch Jr. to Stephen and Helen Welch. He graduated from Brown City High School Class of 1944. He served in the United States Army with the 88th Division 86th Ordinance Battalion of the 5th Army in Italy. He married Mary Smith on March 16, 1959. Bud owned and operated several restaurants starting with the Brown City Hotel, then in North Branch at the OK Corral, then in Brown City with the Harrington Inn, Uptown Café and Bud’s Corner Restaurant. Bud also dairy and crop farmed for 50 years. He served on the Brown City School Board for many years and was also a Brown City Police Deputy Officer for several years. He was past chairman of the board for the Sanilac Office of Veteran Affairs. He was a 32 Degree Mason and a past member of Brown City Rotary Club, the Brown City VFW and Peck American Legion and the Brown City United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Mary “Stub” Welch, 4 children Stephanie (John) Lipa, Colleen (Timothy) Olvey, Mary (Terry) Lambert, and Stephen (Gladys) Welch, 6 step-children, Sandy Shadley, Roger Smith, Nancy (Paul) Smith, Duane “Dewey” (Linda) Smith, Barbara (Larry) Fischer, Janet (David) Schuler, a sister Averille Shoults and 2 brothers Daniel Arden Welch and Ron Welch.. He was preceded in death by 2 children a son Jon Welch and daughter Susan Welch-Dutcher, a step daughter in law Terry Smith, a sister Jackie Root, a brother Robert Welch, 2 grandsons Jonathon Shadley and Jeffrey Hubel-Fletcher, 25 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. A gathering and viewing for family and friends will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday June 20, 2013 at Carman Funeral Home in Brown City. Funeral services will be conducted from the Brown City Missionary Church at 11:00 a.m. with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Peck American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Brown City VFW Floor project fund or United Hospice of Marlette.
