Lela Winborn Bass died at her home in San Antonio, Texas, peacefully in her sleep after a long illness at age 86. Lela was born in Tylertown, Mississippi, to Kenlock and Caroline Fortenberry Winborn. She and her husband moved from Mississippi after their first child was born, but returned regularly to be with family and friends.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Magee Bass, Jr., her parents, and all of her siblings: Nellie Mae Parker, Tom Jim Winborn, Charles Robert Winborn, Lona Hedgepeth, Lola Bass, Carolyn Williamson Brown, Leland Meeks.
Lela is survived by her children: Carol Bass Westermeier and husband James Taylor, Robert Magee Bass, III, Thomas Merrill Bass; grandchildren: Brent Alan Hailes and wife, Sarah Alyn, Lori Hailes Mustachio and husband, Phillip John; great-grandchildren: Brent Collin Hailes and Phillip Sherman Mustachio; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Special thanks to her devoted caregiver of many years, Aurora Torres, and her family.
In her last years Lela helped dedicate a plaque to her husband for his service in World War II at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. She was a member of the Order of the First Families of Mississippi and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, George W. Kendall Chapter, Boerne, Texas.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, MS from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. with services immediately following. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Pallbearers are: Brent Hailes, Collin Hailes, Phil Mustachio, David Grantham, Bill Grantham, and Joe Parker. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or your charity of choice.
