V. JEAN DOWNEY
Violet Jerean “Jean” Downey, age 77, formerly of Kahoka and Canton, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 in Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, IL.
Jean was born October 25, 1935 in Quincy, IL, a daughter of Paul and Helen Horney Roberts.
She married Jesse Lee Downey, Sr. on August 4, 1950 in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1999.
Survivors include a son, Jesse Lee Downey, Jr. of LaGrange, MO; two daughters, Wilma Charlene (Mrs. Harry “Poochie”) Garr of LaGrange, MO and Norma Jean (Mrs. James) Dochterman of Kahoka, MO; five grandchildren: Jennifer L. (Mrs. Tracy) Moore of Gilbert, AZ, Angela (Mrs. Rick) Robertson of Blanchester, OH, Amber L. Garr and Richard Hudnut of Canton, MO, LeAnn (Mrs. Jason) Clifford of Kahoka, MO and Harry (Sabrina) Garr, Jr. of Liberty, MO; seven great-grandchildren, Aridessa, Shelby and Noelle Robertson, Elizabeth and Justin Clifford, Olivia Garr, Austin Smith, and baby Hudnut due in December of 2013; a brother, Lawrence Paul (Faye) Roberts of Pahrump, Nevada; a sister, Elizabeth Roberts of Oceanside, California; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold “Leo” (Charlene) Downey of Monticello, IL and Emory “Jr.” Quesenberry of Hamilton, IL; as well as other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Jessie Jerean Dochterman; and brother, Charles F. Roberts.
First and foremost in Jean’s life was her love for her Lord and Savior. She started each day in fellowship with Him with her scripture reading and cup of hot tea. She was a member of the Trinity Worship Center and formerly held bibles studies in her home and the Clark Co. Nursing Home. She later led bible studies at Montebello Healthcare Center as long as her health permitted. Spreading God’s word was a part of her.
In addition, Jean had a special love for all of her pets she had through the years, including cats, dogs and birds. She was an avid game player, especially Nintendo and Super Nintendo. She was blessed with a special relationship with her grandchildren and their families.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 10, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Pastor Richard Burrell officiating. Special music will be “In the Garden”, “Amazing Grace” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”.
Honorary pallbearers: Jr. Quesenberry, Leo Downey, Harry “Poochie” Garr, Jesse Downey, Jr., Harry Garr, Jr. and Rick Robertson.
Pallbearers: Tim Ayer, Shannon McNamar, Ed McVeigh, Ryan Lewis, Erick Downey and Larry Young.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of services Monday at Wilson Funeral Home.
