Herbert Kidwell Corum

On June 2, 2013, a legendary Veterinarian, Dr. Herbert Kidwell Corum passed on to a greater practice. He will be remembered for his tireless effort and support of fellow Veterinarians, his love for the practice, horsemen, people in general, especially his family, and all those he called “kid”. Doc was a devoted friend and caregiver to people and animals alike. He was known for his expertise in equine medicine both on and off the track. A skilled surgeon regardless of the circumstances, a caring owner, a staunch competitor; yet, always an equine advocate. He listened and truly cared. He used every God given talent to the very end and was not afraid to dream whether it be running that next horse or taking on a new task, even at 86 years old. He was a true believer in Christ as His Lord and Savior. He was born in Coleman, Texas, to Walter Benjamin Corum and Faloma Olletha Farrar. Upon their early deaths he was raised by an adoring, loving aunt who lived on a Texas ranch. While raised on this ranch he learned the ethic of hard work. He came from a generation of workers; work never stopped when the sun went down. Throughout his teens he hauled gas from Big Springs to Pecos. Following graduation from high school he went into the Navy during World War II. Doc later proudly graduated from Texas A&M University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1954. He was practicing up until his death. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters, and a son, Floyd, and a grandson, Steven. He is survived by a son James R. Corum, and a grandson Michael James Corum all of San Antonio. Not only was Doc there for us but when we called he answered and came to help; usually makings things better. He had a sharp wit and never forgot a thing. He had a little ‘saying’ for everything. He leaves us with our respect, love, and fond memories. He was our knight in shining armor with the cleanest truck in town. A memorial service is to be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 10:00A.M, at the Val Verde Fairgrounds Pavilion next to the grand stands facing the finish line. This is all wheelchair accessible. Honorary pallbearers are Michael James Corum, Robert Cordero, Marvin Graham, all the Ramada breakfast club, all fellow Veterinarians, all those he ran horses with, and all family and friends.
