Laverne Kolbe Burke, age 101, of Avon Lake, died Saturday, May 26, 2013 at her residence after a five month illness.
She was preceded in death by her father George W. Kolbe on 12 February 1969, her mother Anna (Eggert) Kolbe on 15 August 1973, her brother Walter A. Kolbe on 18 June 1979, and her husband James H. Burke on 7 May 1996. There are no immediate survivors.
Mrs. Burke was a research psychologist in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Department of Labor from 1935 until 1943 and in the U.S. Department of Defense from 1947 until 1971. She had received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1934 and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the Ohio State University in 1935. She was a member of the American Statistical Association, the American Psychological Association and the Psychometric Society.
She moved back from Washington, D.C. in 2000 and enjoyed reading, quilting, and calligraphy. Laverne celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her friends from Towne Center Community Campus.
Laverne will be loved and missed by all who knew her especially her caregivers Mary and Kaye.
