Father Jan Joseph Santich

Father Jan Joseph Santich, 71, of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at his home. Father Santich died following a sudden illness.

He was born on May 20, 1942 in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the son of John “Jay” George Santich and Margaret “Peggy” Frances Siegert.

Father Santich attended schools in Rock Springs, Wyoming and was a 1960 graduate of the Rock Springs High School. He graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969 with a Master’s Degree. In 1982 he entered into St John’s Abbey (Benedictines); in1989, he took his Solemn Profession as a Benedictine Monk and in 1990 he was ordained a Benedictine Priest. In 1993 he received his doctorate degree in History from the University of California, Berkely. His doctorate thesis was called “Missio Moscovitza” and was published. In 1997 he was Associate Pastor in Riverton, Wyoming , in 2000 he was Parish Pastor in Wheatland, Wyoming and in 2010 retired in Cheyenne, Wyoming

He was involved in several historical societies throughout Wyoming and the United states. He created, researched, documented and edited, an online upload of “The History of the Catholic Church in Wyoming” which was launched on May 16, 2007.

Survivors include his mother Margaret “Peggy” Santich of Fort Collins, Colorado; two brothers Jay Santich and wife Kim of Centennial, Colorado and Jon and wife Melissa Santich of Lakeside, California; three sisters Karla Santich of Fort Collins, Colorado, Peggy Ruble and husband Brad of Cody, Wyoming and Jamie Jensen and husband Rocky of Rapid City, South Dakota; eight nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and nephews and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father John Santich; his maternal grandmother Grace Siegert; paternal grandparents Joe and Rose Santich; aunt Eva Bensen;uncle and aunt Fred and Mary Henetz

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 633 Bridger Avenue, Rock Springs, Wyoming. An evening prayer will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the church. Interment will be in the St. Joseph's Section of the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the rosary and on Friday at the church, one hour prior to services
