Josephine Matlock Brown, 93, of Fredericksburg died Monday, May 13, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was born Oct. 3, 1919, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and was a lifetime member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, holding many positions there. She retired as a physical therapist technician in 1987.
Affectionately called "Big Mama," she served in a range of organizations in the community: Mother of The Celestial Chapter no. 38, Order of the Eastern Star; Women's Auxiliary Post 142, American Legion; Shiloh Cemetery Committee; and Venus Temple no. 108 of the Elks Lodge, just to name a few.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Brown Sr.; her parents, Maude W. Thomas and Walter Johnson; and other loved ones. Survivors left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her seven daughters, Cleo Lewis, Ethel Watson (William), Beverly Brown, Rebecca Brown, Eleanor Johnson (Jesse), Shirley Truslow of Fredericksburg, and Donna Carroll (Elmer) of Silver Spring, Md.; one son, Joseph Brown Jr. of Fredericksburg; two step-daughters, Gloria Watson and Virginia Brown of Stafford; two stepsons, Robert Brown Jr. and Alvin T. Brown of Spotsylvania; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, May 19, at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 20, at Shiloh Baptist Church (New Site), 525 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Lawrence A. Davies delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Stafford.
