SISTER Catherine RAHAL, CSJP, 1915-2013
Sister Catherine Rahal, CSJP, a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace, died on April 26, 2013.
Catherine Rahal was born on August 18, 1915 in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of Philip and Mary Josephine Rahal. She is preceded in death by three sisters, one of whom was Sister Eileen Rahal, CSJP.
Catherine entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Bellingham, WA in 1938 and professed perpetual vows in 1944.
Sister Catherine received a Bachelors of Education from Seattle University and an M.A. in Romance Languages from the University of Washington. Catherine began her teaching career in British Columbia where she taught in several schools. Next, as a gifted teacher of the French Language, she taught the student Sisters at the Seattle University campuses of the St. Joseph of Peace Novitiate and at the Sister Formation College at Providence Heights, Issaquah. She also served for several years at Ketchikan General Hospital as a medical records technician.
With her talent for languages, Sister Catherine was able to motivate young people and seniors to achieve their potential through programs of English as a Second Language at Lifetime Learning Center and Mt. Virgin Refugee Center in Seattle and at Everett Community College. In her later years she travelled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and taught at St. Joseph Boys’ Home.
The Vigil Service is Monday, April 29th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary-on-the-Lake in Bellevue, WA. The Mass of Christian Burial will also be at St. Mary-on-the-Lake on Tuesday, April 30th at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at 2:00 p.m. at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery.
