U.S. Veteran

Joseph “Robert” Jones, 40, of Big Springs was taken from us in a tragic accident on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 on Hwy 96 near Happy Camp, California, while working with his CalTrans rock scaling crew, removing rocks, during slide prevention operations.

Robert was born on April 15, 1973, in Yreka, California to Marty Mangrum and Jim Jones. He attended schools in Yreka and Montague through his Junior year in high school, when he then transferred to South Fork High School in Humboldt County, where he graduated in 1991.

In January 1994, he met the love of his life, Shannon, and they were married on June 15, 1996. Robert is survived by his wife, Shannon, and 3 children, Stephen, Parker and Michael-LA; parents, Ron and Marty Mangrum and Jim and Roseanna Jones; siblings, Rich Jones, Denny Parker, Jolene Burkus, Jeff Jones, as well as “brothers” Ernie Patti, Keia Patti and Corey Downey and step siblings, Rhonda Kladt, Becky Williamson and Ryan Mangrum-Haines. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his CalTrans family.

Robert became a member of the CalTrans family 7 years ago, a career he was very proud of, as he followed in the footsteps of his step-father Ron, who retired from CalTrans after 24 years of service and his Aunt Djuanna, who is still active in the CalTrans family after 20 years.

Robert’s heart revolved around his family and friends; if he called you “friend”, you were considered family. His family was his world and in his mind there was no other in comparison and he made sure everyone was aware of it. He shared his love of the outdoors with much of his family, with regular hunting, fishing and camping trips. In his eyes, and to the point of exhausting arguments…..he was “The Champ“, his family was “the best”, and even when losing, his sports teams were number one.

Robert also deeply enjoyed his time as a volunteer firefighter with his family at the Mayten Fire Department.

He is loved by all and will be missed forever, with the exception of the bass he “slayed” and the bucks he shot.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Grenada Community Berean Church, in Grenada, California, on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 1:00 pm with graveside services immediately following at the Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, California. A Celebration of Life reception will follow for all family and friends after the completion of services, the location of the reception will be announced at a later time.

A Joseph ‘Robert’ Jones memorial fund has been set up at American West Bank (previously Premier West Bank) 123 N. Main Street, Yreka, California 96097, (530) 842-6191.
