Arthur (Art) Edward Shepler

U.S. Veteran

Mr. Arthur Edward Shepler, 92, of Metropolis, IL, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Massac Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the First Baptist Church Brookport. Pastor David Siere, Pastor Bob Craig, and Dr. Chris Shepler will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow at the Metropolis Memorial Gardens.

Art married Merna Mae Henson on December 10, 1949, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henson of Brookport, IL. They have been happily married for 63 years. Art has also been a Mason for 63 years in the Farmers Masonic Lodge #232 AF and AM. On May 25, 1953, Art received 3rd Degree Mason (Initiated, Passed, and Raised). He retired from Allied Chemical after working 27 ½ years and enjoyed actively participating in a reenactment of the Battle of Bunker Hill, being outdoors especially sitting on his porch, walking, picking up pecans, and feeding his squirrel buddy Pete. Most of all, he enjoyed taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing. Art received the Award of Silver Star on January 14, 1944, for gallantry in action in Mignano, Italy. His heroic actions possibly saved vehicles and lives. He also received the Bronze Star during his military service in the Army. Art was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Brookport for over 60 years.

Art is survived by his wife, Merna; 3 children, Henry Shepler and wife Chris of Brookport, Dr. Chris Shepler and wife Peggy of Irmo, SC, Marsha Krueger and husband John of Metropolis; 8 grandchildren, David Shepler and wife Debra of Brookport, Lisa Murray and husband Chad of Metropolis, Rachel Seydilitz and husband John of Irmo, SC, Stephen Shepler and wife Ronda of Royse City, TX, Jared Krueger and wife Amy of Metropolis, Paul Shepler and wife Lydia of Santa Maria, CA, Daniel Shepler and wife Christy of Irmo, SC, Caitlin Krueger of Metropolis; 9 great-grandchildren, Cody Harris of Brookport, Brandon Murphy of Metropolis, Nicholas Shepler of Paducah, Will, Brook, and Caleb Seydilitz of Irmo, SC, Hannah and Whalyn Krueger of Metropolis, Brady Shepler of Santa Maria, CA, Anthony Gonzales of Brookport; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Camden and Harlen Harris of Brookport; step-grandchildren, Paula Basham of Metropolis, Bradley and Michael West of Metropolis; 5 sister-in-laws, Eulean Baker, Lenoris Russell, Alma Schneider all of Metropolis, Ellen Orr of Louisville, KY, Lois Boyd of Carthage, IL; 1 brother-in-law, Bud Henson and wife Margie of Yuma, AR; several nieces and nephews. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great and great-great grandfather who never met a stranger. He had many friends and will be dearly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Lula Jane (Konkler) Shepler; 2 sisters, Violet and Goldie; 5 brothers, William, Harold (Bud), Lester, Fred and Jim.

Visitation will be held on Saturday evening, April 27, 2013 at the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis from 6-8 p.m. Masonic rites will be held at 6 p.m. before the start of the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of donations to the First Baptist Church Brookport Building Fund 700 Pell Road Brookport, IL, 62910.
