Garland James Anderson, age 71 of Wayne, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013. Garland was born October 30, 1941 in the Arnoldview Community near Wayne. He started school there before moving to Wayne Schools in the seventh grade. While at Wayne High School, Garland was a standout athlete that especially excelled at basketball. He graduated in 1959. From there it was on to East Central University where he also played basketball, as 1 of only 2 freshmen who earned a traveling suit. Garland married a young lady from Purcell named Sharon Kay Mantooth. They made their home in Wayne where together they raised their 3 children; daughters, Andrea and Shelley and son, Jay. Garland worked most of his life for the railroad. He retired in 1991 from the AT&SF Railroad after more than 32 years of service. His greatest joy however was his life as a farmer. He greatly enjoyed being outdoors and spending time on the farm. Garland spent more than 32 years as a vendor in the Norman Farmers Market, where he enjoyed the many relationships that he formed. In 1999, Sharon passed away. Garland later married Sharon Ann Woodward in 2000 and they have shared the last 13 years. Garland was a wonderful husband and father, grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed dancing and was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren in all their various activities and sporting events. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell.
He was preceded in death by: His parents, Coy and Edith ‘Verene’ Anderson and His 1st wife, Sharon Kay (Mantooth) Anderson.
Garland leaves behind: His wife, Sharon, of the home; His daughters, Andrea Martin and husband Stan of Wayne and Shelley Jones of Purcell; His son, Jay Anderson and wife Annette of Purcell; 3 sisters, Joyce Moran and husband Allan of Centennial, CO, Donna Williams of Purcell, and Diana Herrin and wife James of Justin, TX; 3 grandchildren, Elizabeth Anderson, Sam Martin and Joe Martin; Several nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 26, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Purcell. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery.
