Neal Robert Johnson

MAYVILLE – Neal R. Johnson, 76, of Bloomer Road, Mayville, died Monday (February 25, 2013) in his home.

He was born July 3, 1936 in Mayville, the son of the late Robert W. and Mildred Dascomb Johnson.

Neal graduated from Mayville Central School in 1954. Neal was a postal letter carrier retiring in 1992 after 34 years of service at the Mayville Post Office. He had also been a Republican Chautauqua County Legislator starting in 1993 and served for two terms.

He was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church for 60 years, Mayville Conservation Club and it’s Trap and Skeet Teams, he had been the chairman for the NYS Fish and Wildlife Management Board, he belonged to the North East Retired Bowling League, Coachman Camping Club, Habitat for Humanity, the Mayville Volunteer Fire Department, Westfield Moose Club, and Peacock Masonic Lodge in Mayville for 45 years.

Neal enjoyed coaching Babe Ruth and Little League baseball, playing horseshoes, cribbage, and going to his class reunions every five years.

He is survived by his wife, Ila Jean Croscutt Johnson whom he married April 27, 1968 in Clymer; four children, Kristine (Rick) Sadok of Bartlesville, OK, Lynn (Waide) Royal of Prairie Grove, AR, Kathleen (Dave) Gray of Mayville, and Karen (Shane) Pieper of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Bridgett Marsh of Mayville, Alycia Sadok of Stillwater, OK, Katie Coleman of San Antonio, TX, and Chris Royal of Warren, PA; four great grandchildren, Maddison Howell, Desirae Howell, Hannah Royal, and Chelsea Royal.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson Robert Neal Johnson.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Mayville United Methodist Church. Rev. Mark Parson will officiate. Burial will be in the Mayville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Freay Funeral Home, Mayville.

Memorials may be made to the Mayville United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society, or the Mayville Fire Department.
