Gilbert Ross Emery, 93, long time resident of Grand Island died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Island. Visitation hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Ross Emery was born April 1, 1920 at Council Grove, Kansas the son of Melvin R. & Florence Luttrell Emery.

He graduated from Wyandotte High School at Kansas City, Kansas and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Mary Virginia Wall on November 9, 1940. Mr. Emery served as an officer in Infantry and the 3rd Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was active in Boy Scouts for 73 years. After leaving Professional Scouting, he served with the Department of Social Services in Grand Island, Beatrice and North Platte for 26 years. Mr. Emery retired from the Department of Social Services, March 31, 1985.

Mr. Emery was a life long member of American Baptist Churches wherever his family lived. He served his church in a number of capacities. Mr. Emery was a 55 year member of Lions Club, Int. and a past member of the Eagles.

Survivors of the immediate family include, one daughter, Judy Hiebert of Kansas City, Kansas, sons and daughters in law, Dave and Janet Emery of Lincoln, Nebraska, Doug and Julie Emery of Grand Island, Nebraska, sister-in-laws Colleen Wall, Evansville, Indiana, and Betty Wall, Riverside, Missouri, six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia, infant son, James, three brothers, Harold, Donald, and Walter, one sister Melva and a granddaughter, Debbie Hiebert.
