Brown, Bertha Louise Gray (Age 76) of Manhattan, New York, formerly of Bel Alton, Maryland.

A Profile of Life

Bertha Louise Gray-Brown (Birdie) 76 of Manhattan NY departed this life of natural causes on Monday, April 15, 2013 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan NY.

She was born on March 30, 1937 in Bel Alton, Maryland to the late Joe and the late Madeline (Simms) Gray.

Birdie as she was more affectionately known was educated in the Charles County Public School System. She later met and married William Bernard Brown, otherwise known as (Sambo) of Pisgah Maryland and from this union three children were born, Rose Brown of (Indian Head) William (Mack) Brown (deceased) and Charles Wiredell Brown of Garfield New Jersey. Later she moved to New York City and had two more children: Emily (Pudney) Brown of Bronx, NY and Roger Brown (Bronx, NY).

Birdie was a home maker and a domestic employee. She was also a member of Lily of the Valley (Chapter 4) Eastern Star; in addition to that she was also a Girl Scout (Brownie) Leader. She was an avid card player, enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed watching old Western movies. She loved to travel as well.

Left to cherish fond memories are her four children, Rose Brown, Charles (Wiredell) Brown, Emily Brown and Roger Brown. Twelve grandchildren, her favorite being Raymond Washington also known as Cuda. Eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Two sisters, Barbara Cooper (Washington DC) and Linda Gray of (Forestville, Maryland). One uncle, Willie Simms and three aunts Bernice Simms, Sarah Queen and Eleanor Simms. A very dear and special cousin Catherine Simms, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friday, April 19, 2013, Viewing, 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Unity Funeral Home, New York.

Monday, April 22, 2013, Viewing, 10:00 a.m. until time of Service 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640. Interment, St. Catherine’s Church Cemetery, 7865 Port Tobacco Road, Mc Conchie, Maryland 20677.
