Gwen Jones, loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother departed this earth on April 3 at the age of 96. A private internment will be held at Crestview Mausoleum in Wichita Falls, Texas. Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Aulds Funeral Home in Electra, with Minister Bob Lee, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Electra.
Born Gwendolyn Imogene South June 1, 1916 in Blue Grove, Texas to William Roswell South and Ethel Pearl Toler South. Gwen graduated from Wichita Falls High School High School in 1933. She graduated from Harden Junior College in 1935, and completed her education at Texas State Teachers College in 1937. While she was attending college in Denton, she would ride the train home (on her fathers railroad pass) each weekend and work at the Holt Hotel.
Gwen taught school in Frisco, Jacksboro and Odessa. She loved teaching the first grade. She was an avid shopper and collected antiques. Her treasured antiques were some she inherited from her great aunts, grandmother and her mother.
Gwen was united in marriage to Paul Alton Jones April 11, 1940 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1997.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was one of four women that ran a second hand store in Electra to benefit the building of the new Methodist Church.
Gwen was an avid gardener, and loved sharing her plants with her friends. She had a love for iris that she inherited from her Mother. She was a very active member of the Electra Garden Club and participated in many flower shows winning many ribbons.
She was hostess to many teas and dinner parties. She had many morning coffees for her Coffee Klatch Group. While her children were in school, she participated in all of their activities including Band Boosters, PTA and Cub Scouts. She was a Den Mother and always decorated cookies for her sons classrooms. She was an wonderful cook, and shared many of her cakes with teachers, the sick and grieving families.
Gwen resided at Horizon Bay Retirement Center in Wichita Falls for 9 1/2 years before moving to the Electra Nursing Center.
She was still owner of land in Clay County that she inherited from her grandfather. This land was purchased in 1896.
Gwen is survived by two sons, Barry Jones and wife, Linda of Electra Tx and Steve Jones and wife, Nancy of San Antonio, Tx. She is survived by 5 grandchildren Alan Jones and wife, Paula of Des Moines, Iowa, Kimberly Woeckener and husband, John of Secaucus, New Jersey, Aaron Jones and wife, Amanda of Austin, Trent Jones and Todd Jones of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, Trevor, Caroline, JP and Hannah. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
