Gary Stephen Swann

U.S. Veteran

SWANN, GARY STEPHEN (AGE 57) OF FORT WASHINGTON, MD

Gary was born in Tokyo, Japan, on August 25, 1955, to Marion K. and Henry A. Swann, Sr. He was one of seven beloved children to the couple, who traveled the world extensively through his father’s military career in the U.S. Air Force. Gary attended schools abroad and locally, graduating from Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland in 1974. He followed his father’s path in the military by serving the U.S. Air Force from 1974 until his Honorable Discharge in 1986. Following his military career, he was a talented technician both personally and professionally, employed as a commercial installation technician with AT&T Communications, then Avaya Communications until his early retirement. Frequently Gary was called on by family when urgent car repair was needed or to come in for household quick fixes. He was the family’s “go-to-guy!”

For several years, Gary was a devoted member of Ebenezer AME Church, Fort Washington, Maryland, serving faithfully on the Security Ministry. The Swann Family is known as a large loving and closely knit family of which Gary was a treasured part. He was often seen working tirelessly at the grill at family gatherings, historically 100-500 in attendance. Gary was dependable and often was the first to arrive when advance preparation for these gatherings was needed. Family was his love and it showed in his life.

He enjoyed sports in all arenas. He loved spending time with his children and grands, traveling and enjoying sporting events together. He could spend hours with his grandson on his knee, watching games on TV. Gary would show up to support his nephews and other family in the area and long distance. He himself was a talented sportsman, earlier enjoying and coaching softball and most recently golf, as often as he could. He also enjoyed playing with his little nieces and nephews, who affectionately called him “Uncle G.”

On Thursday, March 28, 2013, Gary quietly entered into eternal life at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

Gary was preceded in death by his close friend and brother, Eric Swann. He is loved, remembered and mourned by his parents, Marion and Henry Swann, Sr., Fort Washington, Maryland, his cherished children Shauna’ Swann and Gary Swann II, (and their mother Doris Swann Linton) of Houston, Texas, his beloved grandchildren Gabriel and Lovely Swann, also of Houston, Texas; his adored brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Swann, Jr. (and Beverly), San Antonio, Texas, Ronald Swann (and Wanza), Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Jeffrey Swann, Fort Washington, Maryland, William Swann, Fort Washington, Maryland; and his devoted and loving sister and brother-in-law Candace Swann Stanback (and Horace Stanback), Suitland, Maryland. He had an abundance of close and cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, cousins (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and an overwhelming host of friends.

The family is asking for those who are able to donate towards his Memorial Fund in lieu of sending flowers. Please see www.GarySwann.com

His viewing will be held from 10:00am until time of Service 11:30am on Thursday, April 11th in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
