Floyd R. (Denzil) Pennington, age 67 of Oneida, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at his home with his loving family by his side.
Born in Fork Mountain, Tennessee on March 7, 1946, he was the son of the late Dewey and Anna Hall Pennington. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneida.
Denzil served as Alderman of Oneida for two years and became Mayor and served for twelve years. During his service to the Town of Oneida and its citizens he was instrumental in finishing the railroad overpass, connecting Depot Street with Paint Rock Road taking out the very dangerous crossing of the railroad. As Mayor, Denzil applied for and received numerous grants to remove substandard homes from a flooding area in south Oneida, and expand an Industrial area to create new jobs. He was also self employed having owned and operated several businesses, was a United States Army Veteran of Vietnam having earned a Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle), and was a member of the American Legion Post #136 and life member of VFW Post #5669 both of Oneida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Noel Pennington; sisters Joyce Trosper and Brenda Wright; son James Patrick Perry.
Survived by his wife of 35 years Danna Pennington; sons: Denzil Pennington and his daughter Brittany Rankin, Dale Pennington and wife Tonya, David Donahue and wife Tracy all of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dwayne Perry and his children Jesse, Ashley, Olivia Perry, and Patricia Young and husband Michael all of Oneida, daughter Tina Strunk and husband Dean of the Annadell Community and children Corey Strunk and wife Lacey, Colby Strunk and wife Jessi; great grandchildren: Brayden, Brylan, Calli, and Casen Strunk, Prayleigh Welch, Hadleigh Rankin, Matthew Perry, Gage and Stephen Young; brothers: Paul Pennington and wife Linda of Winfield, Jim and wife Martha of Helenwood, and Hoey Pennington; sisters: Willa and husband Bobby Sexton of Robbins, Jewell Cox of Winfield, Wanda Ashcraft and husband Tony of Oneida, Carolyn Stephens and husband Willard of Oneida, and Angie Owens; many other relatives and friends.
Friends may visit with the Pennington family on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 6 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Bro. Dudley Harness officiating. Graveside service will be on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 12 p.m. in the Stanfill Cemetery in Kentucky with full military honors provided by American Legion Post #136 of Oneida.
