Donna Lee Ashenfelter

Donna L. Ashenfelter, 80 of Trenton, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at her home. A Celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Dockery Chapel United Methodist Church near Trenton. Inurnment will be at the Coon Creek Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hometown Hospice, Shiloh Children’s Home, or Dockery Chapel United Methodist Church in care of the Funeral Home.

Donna was born August 11, 1932 to Richard and Alice (Fox) Hamilton in rural Sullivan County. She graduated from Trenton High School in 1950. After graduation Donna was united in marriage to Richard Ashenfelter July 18, 1950 in Chillicothe MO. The couple made their home in the Trenton area; to this union 2 children were born, Tracy and Kristin. Donna was a stay at home mom who delighted in caring for her family’s every need. After the children were grown she enrolled at Trenton Junior College for 2 years and transferred to Northeast Missouri State where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education. She started her teaching profession at Linn County School where she taught for 5 years. Donna and Richard took a couple of years off and traveled all over the Midwest telling folk stories and weaving hickory baskets. Working together they held their audience captive making their stories come alive down to the smallest detail. Donna later took a position at Rissler Elementary in Trenton as the Librarian and dedicated 15 years of service. She loved being with the students and was always willing to go the extra mile. She later served as the Librarian at Grundy R-6 for 3 years.

Donna attended the Dockery Chapel Church for many years where she enjoyed the fellowship she shared with her church family. She liked all aspects of gardening but especially working in her flower garden. She was a wonderful cook who delighted in making that special meal for her family and friends. Every year she would host a cousin’s weekend where camping, playing games and reminiscing were highlights enjoyed by all who attended. Donna was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who spent her life serving others. Her legacy of hope, faith and love of family and friends will live on through those who knew and loved her. She was an inspiration who will be greatly missed.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents and by her daughter Kristin Roberts, 2 nephews, Mark Callen and Barry Snyder.
