Donald V.C. Birrell, Jr. Harrisonburg

Donald Van Court Birrell, Jr. 87 of Harrisonburg died February 18, 2013 at his home. Mr. Birrell was born December 6, 1925 in Quincy, Massachusetts and was the son of the late Donald and Ruth Eldridge Birrell, Sr. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, VA, then served in the United States Air Force during World War II and graduated of The College of William and Mary. Mr. Birrell worked for the City of Harrisonburg Transportation Department until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. On July 2, 1955, he married the former Jane Lokey who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Rankin and her husband Gary, Penn Laird; one brother Kirk Birrell and his wife Natalie, Huntington, Massachusetts; one granddaughter, Niki Lane and her husband Bobby, and great grandchildren, Addison and Crosby Lane all of San Diego, California; and a number of nephews, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Mr. Birrell was preceded in death by a great grandson, Tanner Lane. Reverend Jerry John and Reverend Bob Talbott will conduct a graveside service Thursday afternoon February 21, 2013 at 2p.m. at Woodbine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, in his memory. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Southern Care Hospice, Amedisys Home Health Care, Inc. and Continuing Care Home Health Services for their care and assistance over the past several months.
