Clair Winton Johnson

U.S. Veteran

Clair Winton Johnson was born January 7th, 1923 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He made the long drive to California with his parents, Andrew and Edna, and his four brothers, William, Swayne, Garland, and Jess, eventually settling in Torrance. He graduated from Torrance High with his high-school sweetheart, Virginia, in 1942. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 to serve in World War II. After almost three long years of military service overseas, Clair came home in 1946 to marry Virginia. Clair played semi-professional baseball with the Indianapolis Indians before settling down to raise a family. In partnership with his, father-in-law, he operated two Atlantic Richfield service stations in the South Bay for twenty-two years. Clair also worked as a mechanic for the U.S. Postal Service from 1967-1987. His free time was centered around family, fishing, and gaming. Retirement afforded him more time for fishing, and he could be seen every Thursday on the Isle of Redondo winning the jackpot for his prized catch. His family and neighbors enjoyed the spoils of his victory! Clair and Virginia used their free time to travel to Hawaii and Europe (and anywhere there was gaming and fishing). Clair was a fun-loving man who was able to create joy in everyday existence. He lived simply, loved well, and was forever devoted. He will be missed by all. Clair is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Diane Lyons (John), son Bart Johnson (Therese), and daughter Suzy Zukas (Don), grandchildren Brent Johnson (Sally), Jamie Westfall, Jason Johnson (Katie), Greg Hale, Kim Hoffman (Bryan), Jenessa Johnson, Alyssa Zukas (Josh), Katy Zukas, and great-grandchildren Alexa, Jessica, Danielle, Kylie, Jessa, Michael, Jacob, Jace, Tyler and Sean. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, at First Christian Church of Torrance, 2930 El Dorado Street. A donation may be made in Clair’s memory to First Christian Church of Torrance.
