Behind Every Good Kid Is a Great Dad
GLENS FALLS --- Mr. Robert A. Jones, Sr., “Bob” passed away comfortably on February 6, 2013 in the loving presence of family. The family wishes sincerest thanks to the wonderful, caring staffs at The Stanton Nursing Home and Glens Falls Hospital.
Bob was born to Robert J. and Amelia (Therrien) Jones in Hudson Falls, New York on November 6, 1920. He grew up in Warrensburg and in 1942 enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific Theater until 1945. After the war, Robert returned to work for the Grand Union Company, where he was a hard-working manager for more than 40 years. Bob married his wife of 65 years, Helen (Alecknavic) Jones, on Thanksgiving Day in 1947 at The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hoosick Falls, New York. After retirement, he was often found on summer days working at Gooney Golf. Helen and Bob enjoyed many years volunteering with Meals and Wheels and loved to spend vacations traveling with family and friends. Mr. Jones was a long-time resident of Glens Falls where he was often seen raking the leaves or shoveling the snow, as the season required.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter Susie in July 1968; also, his nephew Steve Jones, daughter-in-law Pamela Merrett Jones, son-in-law Stephen Lynn, and sisters-in-law Vera and Frances.
In addition to his beloved wife of 65 years, Helen Jones, Mr. Jones also leaves behind an older sister Eleanor Cathcart, a younger brother Arthur J. Jones (Joan), and a sister-in-law Olga Eberle. He is also survived by eight children: Denny Jones (Pauline), Barbara Ann Lynn, Francie Lewis (Dick), Rob Jones, Jr. (Diane), Therese Sheehan (Pat), Carol Jones, Kathleen Jones and Fred Jones (Laura); fifteen grandchildren: Daniel, Nathan and Stephanie Jones; Joe and Matthew Lynn; Jon and Kyle Lewis; Sarah, Julie and Katie Jones; Rebecca and Megan Sheehan; Sydney Jones; and Tyler and Elise Jones; seven great-grandchildren: Breanne and Carter Lewis; Olivia and Cody Lewis; and Hartley, Merrett and Corinne Jones; special nephews Mike and David Jones; and many other family and friends.
The wife of one of his grandson's said, "He was one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle man I've met (with a heartwarming smile). I'm glad I had the pleasure of knowing him." Another granddaughter said, "He always had that special smile that filled the room with joy." He will be missed and honored by all who were blessed to have known him.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, February 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury.
A funeral Mass will follow at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glens Falls.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at St. Mary’s Cemetery, South Glens Falls.
