LaVerna M Coartney

CHARLESTON, IL – LaVerna M. Coartney, age 82 of Charleston, entered her heavenly home while at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday morning, February 9, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at Adams Funeral Chapel.  Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at Noon on Saturday with Pastor Tom Skinner officiating and with Ladies Auxiliary Services conducted by the Charleston VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.  It is requested that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the Macular Degeneration Association.  Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.LaVerna was born on December 23, 1930 in Mattoon, Illinois and was a daughter of the late Ormond and Mildred (Frazier) Perry.  She was married to C. “Art” Campbell and later married Paul A. Coartney – both preceded her in death.  She is survived by three loving and devoted children, Chester A. “Chet” Campbell, Millie Towles and Paula Coartney, all of Charleston; three grandchildren, J.T. Towles and wife Katie of Indianapolis, Beth Bradford and fiancé Cameron Parrott and Danielle M. Rook and husband Michael, all of Charleston; seven great-grandchildren; four stepchildren and their families, Carolyn Kolling and Judy Barding of Charleston, Marty Misenheimer and husband Roger of Mattoon, and Larry Coartney of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and a brother, Ormond Perry Jr. of Vallejo, California.  In addition to her parents and husbands, LaVerna was preceded in death by a brother and a stepdaughter, Shirley Coartney.

LaVerna was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Women of the Moose Charleston Chapter No. 1175 and a member of the Charleston VFW Ladies Auxiliary Paul McVey Post 1592 for more than fifty years.  She was also a former member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.  She was employed with Moore Business Forms in Charleston for more than thirty years where she developed many enduring friendships.

LaVerna was lovingly referred to as “Short” by many.  She enjoyed being out and about and shared an abundance of special times with family and friends.   She possessed a kind heart and a sense of humor that was accompanied by a feisty spirit which kept life interesting.  She enjoyed bowling and until her eyesight deteriorated she was an avid reader.  LaVerna was truly the matriarch of her family.  She was a loving and supportive wife as well as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She truly made her family her priority and they were blessed with her unconditional love and support.  Spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was her specialty – and she was good at it!  Her family and many friends will miss her presence in their lives but will be comforted by their many wonderful memories.
