George Roosevelt Newmeyer

Longtime Center resident George Roosevelt Newmyer, 93, died January 25, 2013 at his home in Center under hospice care.

George was born September 3, 1919 on a farm NE of Atlanta in North-Central Missouri. He was the sixth of seven children born to Henry Ray and Lula May Daugherty Newmyer. In 1926, the family moved to a farm in the Center area. Following the severe drought of 1934, his parents and the two youngest children moved back to Missouri. Living through the Great Depression, George's attitudes were significantly shaped by his experiences while growing up poor during that time. He showed a lot of initiative early in his life, uncommon for one who was "the baby" of a large family for his first decade.

In 1937, George returned to Center and supported himself while finishing high school. He enlisted in the Navy for 6 years. After training as an aerographer (weather observer and forecaster), he was assigned to the combat areas of the SW Pacific for the rest of WWII. Four years after enlisting, he received the rank of Chief Petty Officer. George was honorably discharged in 1947.

At the end of his enlistment, he returned to Colorado and engaged in farming, raising alfalfa, potatoes, barley and sheep. He ventured into timber operations until becoming Postmaster at Center, a job he held until his retirement. During much of this time, he took care of his aged parents. During his Postmaster career, fire destroyed the post office facility in rented quarters and George worked tirelessly too keep full services in Center while the new post office was being built. He married Ruth Irene McIntyre in April of 1957 and they enjoyed 22 years together until her death in 1979.

George was active in the VFW and American Legion and served on the Homelake Advisory Board for a time.

He is survived by his son David Newmyer of Center; his step-children Sally Meek of Melbourne, FL and Bob (Marion) Tarbell of Atwater, CA; his brother Earl (JoAnn) Newmyer of Mead, CO; as well as ten grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

George is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, his brothers and sisters May Belle Newmyer, Harry Newmyer, Ethel (Tony) Ponik, Lena (Clyde) Garner and Joe Newmyer.

Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service was held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Rogers Family Mortuary Chapel, 404 Morris Street in Monte Vista. Contributions are suggested in his memory to Hospice del Valle, Habitat for Humanity or to the charity of your choice.
