Jack W. McKinney was born in Salmon, Idaho on March 3, 1916, son of John S. and Laura McKinney. He passed away on October 16, 2012. He had one brother Sam P. McKinney. Jack grew up in Lemhi County and graduated from Salmon High School. He and Sam spent hours around livestock on several ranches. Jack graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in Journalism. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He was also the editor of the Argonaut, the university newspaper. He also received a commission through R.O.T.C. Following graduation, Jack studied and received a Master’s Degree in Journalism from northwestern University in Illinois. He married his sweetheart, Helen Mathews, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he worked as a journalist. The couple moved to Boise, Idaho. Their only child, John S. McKinney, was born in Boise in 1942; he is now a retired attorney in Salmon. Jack worked as an editor on the Statesman newspaper in Boise. At the beginning of WWII, Jack was inducted into the army as a Second Lieutenant. While serving at that rank, it was discovered that he had diabetes and he was medically discharged from the service. The couple moved back to Salmon for his health. At that time he went into the livestock business and was active in that business until his death. Jack was the oldest member of the BPOE Lodge 1620 of Salmon Elks and was a member for over 67 years. Jack and Leon Skelton of Idaho Falls developed a close working and friendship relationship for over sixty years in the cattle business and as partners, it was done on a “hand shake” all of the time. Jack always said his years in that business were more like a hobby than work, he loved the challenges. During his later years he was cared for by wonderful people, Marcie and Bill Neal of Baker. During his years in the cattle business, he traveled extensively through Idaho, Montana and Canada making many long lasting relationships and friendships. He thought of and talked about those often. He enjoyed betting on sports with Loren Arfmann and played pitch card games at the Elks until his death. He went out with a smile! He is survived by his son, John (Pat) McKinney of Salmon, Idaho, grandsons: Jack (Cindy) McKinney, Matt (Page) McKinney of Boise, Idaho and Peter McKinney of Missoula, Montana; great grandchildren: Zack, Madison and Luke and step-granddaughter Jazzy; sister-in-law Barbara McKinney of Lemhi, Idaho and cousin Rose Bolton of Salmon, Idaho, nephews: Mark (Melissa) McKinney of Gooding, Idaho and Whit (June) McKinney of Lemhi, Idaho.
