ALVA ASH, JR.
Alva Ash, Jr., age 77, of Wayland, MO, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at his home.
Junior was born March 19, 1935, in Kahoka, a son of Alva and Wilma Taylor Ash.
He married Betty Jo Toops and they were the parents of five children. She survives and resides in Keokuk, IA.
Additional survivors include three sons, Stephen Ash (Billie Lay) of Kahoka, MO, Mark Ash of Wayland, MO, and Scott (Donna) Ash of Wayland, MO; two daughters, Sheree Ash (Todd McCann) of St. Francisville, MO and Dawna (Bill) Reece of Hamilton, IL; eleven grandchildren: Charles Lay, Roman Lay, Samantha (Mrs. Brian) Sorghan, Lisa Lay (Josh Burgess), Cole Ash, Amanda Ash, Markie Ash (Richie Rhodes), Tonya Ash (Chuck Mitchell), Jaymie (Mrs. Jake) Jackson, Marissa Ash and April Miller; thirteen great grandchildren: Devlin, Dylin and Braiden Soraghan, Jerret Burgess, Stephen Lay, Daisie Rhodes, Tinslee Mitchell, Derek Jackson, Arieanna Ash, Jealousy and Aubrey Claiborne, Jazzlyn Ash and Corvin Lentz; one brother, Wendell (Jewell Ann) Ash of Wyaconda, MO; five sisters, Hazel Crowe of Oconomowoc, WI, Dorothy (Mrs. Joe) Leffler of Keokuk, IA, Wilma (Mrs. Jesse) Forquer of Wyaconda, MO, Zelda (Mrs. Albert) Sturm of Kahoka, MO, and Doreen (Mrs. Bill) Bergman of Kahoka, MO; a sister-in-law, Earlene Ash of Highland, IL; a first cousin, Mary Katherine Ash of Kahoka, MO; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrell Ash.
Junior graduated from Kahoka High School in 1953. He worked a short time at Foote Mineral and Swift and Co. He retired from B.T.R. in Keokuk in 1997. He had farmed west of Kahoka and near Luray in addition to his employment.
Junior had opened his home to many children through the years. He knew every kid in Wayland and whenever he would cut up a watermelon they would show up. He enjoyed gardening and working on tractors. He was a huge western fan and loved Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Survivor and the History Channel. He was a huge John Deere and John Wayne fan. He especially loved his grandkids, great grandkids and dogs.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Millikin officiating. Burial will follow in the Kahoka Cemetery.
Friends may call at Wilson Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family or Northeast Missouri Hospice.
