MACKINAW – Mary Ann Canty, 72, of Mackinaw, passed away at 8:34 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the OSF St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Room.
Mary Ann was born on February 15, 1940 in Peoria to Francis and Treva (Hicks) Canty.
She is survived by her foster son, William Curry of Washington, IL; Stephanie “Sam” Schmidgall of Mackinaw; three nieces, Mary Ann Whiteside of Japan, Kathy Pfeiffer of Pekin, and Roberta Faulkner of Peoria; and one nephew, Jim Whitworth of Mandeville, LA.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Whitworth.
Mary Ann received her undergraduate degree from Fontbonne College in St. Louis, and then received her Master’s degree from the University of Illinois.
She was the head math teacher at Woodruff High School where she taught for 31 years.
Mary Ann touched the lives of many people as teacher, mentor, and friend in community involvement, most recently in the ways she supported the Mackinaw community.
She loved to fish and enjoyed woodworking.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Friday, January 25, 2013 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton. Father Mark DeSutter and Father David Whiteside will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
