U.S. Veteran

Giles H. Woolf- Age 90 of Menasha passed away on January 15, 2013. He was born on July 30, 1922 to William and Amanda (Wiese) Woolf in Stoughton, WI. Giles served in the army with the 303rd engineer battalion as a PFC from 1943-1945, and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. He earned an EAME ribbon with one battle star, good conduct medal and the Purple Heart.

After recovering from his injuries, he finished college at the University of Wisconsin Stout, earning his Bachelor’s degree. Following his graduation, Giles married Kathleen F. Stitzel on October 24, 1947 in Mitchell, South Dakota. Giles was employed by Menasha School District as a printing teacher at Menasha High School from 1950 until 1970. He greatly enjoyed working with the students in the shop and producing the Nicolet yearbook. He was a believer in life-long education and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Stout University in 1965.In 1970 he began his teaching career at Fox Valley Technical College where he was very involved in the Graphic Arts Department expansion.

Giles was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church for many years. He served as an altar layperson and enjoyed serving the shut- ins of the parish. Giles was always grateful for the many friendships found through his church.

During his 27 years of retirement, Giles enjoyed travel and the performing arts with his wife Kathleen, as well as photography, reading and word puzzles. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was devoted to his family and touched many lives with his kindness. He was a man of faith and had many friendships. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son David, son-in-law Gary Helein, and daughter-in-law Kathy Woolf.

Survivors include many loved ones, including his loving wife of 66 years, Kathleen, son Stephen Woolf, daughters Elizabeth Woolf (Dan Krause), Margaret (Steven) Verkuilen, Katharine Helein, and Theresa (Kevin) Hungerford. He has 12 grandchildren: Adam Krause, Ryan Krause, Philip Krause, Sarah (Matthew) Kuehmichel, Daniel (Megan) Woolf, Kellie (James) Smillie, Brad (Jeni) Johnson, Andrea (Clint) Woldt, Rachelle Johnson, Josh Helein, Molly Hungerford and Jonah Hungerford. Giles also has 15 great-grandchildren. Giles is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth (Howard) Jensen and one brother, Lawrence (Trudy) Woolf.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 25, 2013, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 226 Washington St., Menasha, with Fr. Ralph Osborne officiating. The visitation will be held AT THE CHURCH on Thursday from 4:00-7:00 PM in their chapel. There will be a visitation at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Military honors will be provided at the time of interment.
