Worcester- Richard ‘Richie’ E. Howard Born Sept 1, 1924, a lifelong resident of Worcester died Thursday, January 3. He graduated Commerce High School class of 1942 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (EE degree), class of 1951 where he was Vice President of his class, a member of the Honor Society (Skull) and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He worked for many years at the Worcester Gas Light Company before forming Therm, Inc in 1989 A sports advocate, he captained his Lincoln Square Boys Club basketball team to 72 straight wins. He captained his college basketball team in his junior and senior years. Richie worked tirelessly as the first Vice President of the Lincoln Square Boys Club Alumni Association and as a District Director of the Ty Cobb Little League and as a team manager for both the Ty Cobb Little League and the Ty Cobb Babe Ruth League. A World War ll Veteran, he was awarded a Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he leaves his wife of 65 yearsr, Julia M (Yankus), his eight children: Judy A wife of Ralph Nelson, Nancy E wife of Mark W. Cronin, John P and his wife Barbara (Hammond), Joan M and her partner Pat Barr (deceased), Barbara J wife of John Cherecwich, Michael A and his wife Susan (Ritchotte), David E and his wife Carolyn (Kheboian), Joseph P and his partner Mat Price; and fourteen grandchildren: Mark W Cronin Jr, his wife Yuko (Isome), Matthew Nelson, his wife Carla (Hall), Colleen Cronin, Richard Cherecwich, Michael Howard, Marissa Howard, her husband Anthony Nguyen, Daniel Howard, Andrew Cherecwich, Airman Justin Howard USAF, Adam Howard, Alison Howard, Kevin Howard, Gregory Howard and Nicholas Howard. He was predeceased by his brother Ralph Howard, and his sisters Dorothy Rotti and Shirley Billings
A lifelong member of the Auburn-Webster Lodge of Elks #2118, he served as a Trustee and Treasurer. He was a weekly communicant at Our Lady of the Angels Church, Worcester
A Funeral will be held Monday, January 7, from CALLAHAN AND FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Mausoleum. Visiting Hours will be held Sunday, January 6 from 4 to 8 PM with the Elks Ritual to be conducted at 5 PM in the funeral home.
