Artha Mae Lehr, 84, of Lake Iroquois, Loda passed away at 8:40 p.m. Monday, December 31, 2012, the Illinois Knights Templar Home, Paxton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loda with Rev. David A. Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Ride Cemetery, Loda. Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service on Saturday at the church.

Artha Mae was born January 22, 1928 in Stephens, Arkansas; one of five daughters of Alva and Luda Brown Williams Allen. Her mother died in childbirth and the five young girls were raised by their father. The girls all hoed and picked cotton during their childhood years. At sixteen, Artha Mae left to live with a cousin in Chicago, who helped her find a job. She worked assembling radio parts for CINCH, later worked for AT&T, as a wireman working on large computers and later for Western Electric, cleaning and refurbishing phones. Her last employment was with Lucent Technology.

Artha Mae married John “Jack” Lehr and moved to Bolingbrook. There she was active in raising, selling and showing Great Dane and Greyhound puppies. She acquired many trophies and awards for her dogs at suburban Chicago dog shows.

The Lehr’s built a home at Lake Iroquois, Loda in 1993 and moved there permanently a few years later. For the past several years “Mae” has been a resident of Illinois Knights Templar Home, Paxton.

Mae was an avid fisherman and loved her pets—two cats, a blue and gold macaw (raised from a chick and now 35 years old) and her Doberman Pincher “Candy”.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Pauline Primm, Helen Byrne, Ruby Allen; and her husband, Jack.

Surviving is a daughter, Dolores (Pat) Curran of Lone Tree, CO; a sister, Shirley Allen of Camden, AR; a niece Sandra (Louie) Primm and a grand niece, Deborah (John) Hemauer, both of Camden, AR.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loda or the Iroquois County Animal Rescue, 100 NW Lincoln, Iroquois, IL 60945
