Major Robert P. Brooks, 83, of DeRidder, LA, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, December 14, 2012, Lake Charles, LA, after a 5 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Bob” was born on July 12, 1929, in Yonkers, New York where he lived and was educated until he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 19. He served his country in Korea and two tours in Viet Nam. The Marine Corps was his home until he retired in 1970. He was meritoriously decorated with a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star, earning not only respect but the love of his men and superiors alike.
Always learning, Bob returned to school and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology and a Master and Doctoral Candidate in Criminal Justice. Bob began a second career as a Prison Warden in Missouri and then a Police Officer for the DeRidder Police Department. He volunteered for FINS/CASA as a Liaison/foster parent, served in teaching defensive driving courses and was very active in his church, St. Joseph’ Parish in DeRidder as a Spiritual Director conducting retreats, teaching and blessing everyone he knew.
A third career was started as a College Professor at Northwestern University, inspiring student until he retired from teaching in 2007.
Bob was an influential and gracious man who will be sorely missed by everyone who met him. There was always a song or a laugh on his lips and open arms for anyone in need.
Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Thelma Brooks of DeRidder, LA; brother, Richard Brooks of North Carolina; sister, Kathy Fliger of Arlington, VA; daughter, Betsy Cornett and husband Dan of San Diego, CA; sons, David Brooks and wife Ellen of St. Amant, LA; Robert Brooks of Colfax, LA; grandchildren, Nathan Cornett and wife Joanna and Jacob Cornett of San Diego, CA, Jesse Krych of San Diego, CA, John, Janean and Charles Brooks of Baton Rouge, LA; Cassie Brooks of St. Amant, LA, Ron Kern and wife Jennifer of Plaquemine, LA and Ronica Farris of DeRidder, La; great grandchildren, Lucy and Bane Krych of San Diego, CA and Judd and Demi Farris of DeRidder, LA, Lindy Kern of Plaquemine, LA, numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, a German Shepherd, Max.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, DeRidder, LA. His visitation will begin on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 5:00 PM until 10:00 PM at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder, LA with a Rosary at 7:00 PM.
“If you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you; if you can, do what you must do and do it well despite the turmoil around you; if you can keep your conscience clear and do the right thing despite the urging of those who seek only for themselves money, glory and fame, if you can meet triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same; you will be a Man my son, and be worthy of the name.
