Joan C. Babiec

SPRINGFIELD – Joan C. (O’Day) Babiec, 75, of Chicopee entered into eternal rest on December 13, 2012 in Baystate Medical Center. Joan was born in Chicopee on March 28, 1937, the daughter of the late James T. and Jeanette (Deschenese) O’Day, was educated at Holy Name Grammar and Holy Name High Schools in Chicopee and has been a lifelong resident. Her career spanned several years and included employment by Sickles Corp., Qualex and Carando’s. She and her late husband were active in the Scouting community where Joan served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, was a member of the Property Committee for the Pioneer Valley Girl Scouts and had also served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Joan is predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Max S. Babiec, Jr. who passed away on March 18, 1993, a son, Thomas M. Babiec on February 5, 2005 and a daughter-in-law, Grace A. (Dart) Babiec on May 16, 2009. Her surviving children are James Babiec and his wife Carol of Chicopee, Paul Babiec of Springfield, Daniel Babiec and his wife Cathy of Worcester, Timothy Babiec and his partner Richard Decker of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Richard Babiec of Manchester, CT, Frances Kwasniewski and her husband Allen of Holden, Jacqueline Welch of West Springfield and a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Babiec of Kennebunkport, ME. Her 13 grandchildren who will always hold her memory close are Jimmy, Adam, Jeremy, Erica, Sarah, Gregory, Paul, Jr., Elisabeth, Christopher, Melissa, Josh, Joseph and Seth. Joan is also survived by 3 great grandchildren; Parker, Riece and Naomi and her brother, Paul O’Day and his wife Nancy of Annandale, VA. The funeral will be held on Monday morning, Dec. 17, 2012 beginning at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church, 319 Broadway, Chicopee at 11 a.m. The burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, from 2 to 5 p.m. Contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to the American Heart Assn., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA, 01701-4680.
