Bernice Conley

Bernice Margaret Conley passed away December 3, 2012 in Blythe, California. She was 92 years old. Bernice was born August 30, 1920 to Laurinda Scott Pullins and Charles W. Pullins in Oologah, Oklahoma. She had two sisters, Etta Kell and Mildred Hawk and five brothers, Harold, John, Cecil, Raymond and Donald. Her brother and sister, Harold and Ruby, passed away in infancy. As a child, she grew up in the northeastern part of Oklahoma, milking and herding cows, taking care of her little brothers and sisters and riding her horse, “Old Dobbin”, to school. Bernice went to grade school and graduated with special awards. She became an expert seamstress and upholsterer and many enjoyed the benefits of her talents.

Bernice married Elmer L. Conley in 1942 and moved to Blythe, CA after WWII where Elmer worked in construction. Their son, Charlie, was born in 1947 and they decided to make Blythe their home for the next 35 years. Bernice worked at Sinnocks Lumber and Furniture Store and later as a receptionist for the Riverside County offices. She was a member of the Eastern Star, volunteered many hours to the community, including the Blythe Fire Department, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and Blythe Little League. Elmer retired in 1976 and he and Bernice soon after moved back to Oklahoma, but Bernice returned to Blythe permanently in 2004.

Elmer and Bernice were always working and helping others, especially family and friends. Anyone who went to Bernice’s house would always get a good, home-cooked meal of biscuits and gravy or fried chicken or her famous homemade apple pie. She loved to dance to country western music and continued doing the two-step well into her eighties. Bernice was a friend to all and never prejudged anyone and loved to visit and brighten your day.

Bernice was preceded in death by her dear husband, Elmer, in 1986 and will be laid to rest next to him in Talala, Oklahoma.

She is survived by her son Charlie Conley (Trudy); seven grandchildren, Wyndon (Mary), Brien, Denise (Jim) Martindale, Deanna, Sharla (Abel) Valdez, Brandon and Jonathan Conley; six great grandchildren; brothers, Harold ‘Red’ Pullins (Hazel) and John Pullins (Darlene); her caretaker Glenda Sutton and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her feisty yet loving kindness and her dedication to her family and friends. Visitation was held at Frye Chapel on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 4-6:00 pm. Services and burial took place in Nowata, Oklahoma on December 8, 2012.
