John Lee Bennett was born December 7, 1940. He was the son of the late Esther Joyner and John C. Bennett. His late stepfather, Willie L. Joyner was also an integral part of his rearing as a youngster.
John Lee departed his life on December 1, 2012 after a brief period of illness at the Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley M. Bennett. The two will now rest in eternal peace forever.
John Lee was educated in Mecklenburg County Public Schools. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior and has baptized at Gethsemane Baptist Church at the age of 14 under the pastorate of Rev. Nathaniel Baldwin.
John Lee later migrated to Brooklyn, New York where he was employed by General Motors for many years and later at Pat & Ralph Landscaping. He loved being a gardener and took pride in the beautifully manicured lawns that he took care of. He was also an avid reader and as a proud father, his major purchase for his children was when he bought a set if World Book Encyclopedias and read them from cover to cover and expected them to do the same.
John had a way of making everyone his family, so whomever he met he would try to claim them as family. The family has shared precious moments and the ups and downs of life.
Those left to cherish his memories are: Stepdaughter, Rebecca Easley, Baltimore, MD, Children, Linda Giles (Ricky), of Upper Marlboro, MD, Virginia Manuel (Calvin) of Brooklyn NY, Edith Brown of Kenbridge, VA, Floyd Bennett (Betty) of Laurence Harbor, NJ, James Bennett (Vicky) of Rahway, JJ, Ester Bennett of Brooklyn, NY, and Denise Bennett of Bracey, VA; one brother, James E Bennett (Louise) of La Crosse, VA; one brother-in-law, Andrew Alexander (Jean) of Dayton, OH; two sisters-in law, Betty Jeffers of South Hill, VA and Mary Whisonant of Newark, NJ; one god-daughter, Renee Simmons of Newark, NJ; one aunt , Beatrice Baskerville of Brodnax, VA; grandchildren, Bryant, Prince, Brandon, Cedric, Jovan, Darryl, Sharelle, Ashley, Ciera and Jateria loved their granddaddy and enjoyed many Saturdays with him listening to music and dancing all in fun; twelve great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Venture Grove Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 am with Rev. Leo Thorpe, Pastor officiating. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm on Friday, December 7, 2012 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
