ALAMOSA—Longtime Alamosa resident Dorothy “Dottie” McFadden, 87, died peacefully at home in Alamosa on December 2, 2012.

Dottie was born on October 2, 1925 in Overton, NE, to Jacob and Dorothy Daul. After graduating from high school, she entered the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver as a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. She graduated in 1946 and would have been deployed had not WWII ended. A blind date about that time led her to meet a student from the Colorado School of Mines. Dottie and D.H. “Mac” McFadden, Jr. were married a year later on December 27, 1947 in Lakewood, Colorado.

After their marriage, Dottie worked as a pediatric nurse in Denver and helped put Mac through the rest of school. Mac & Dottie spent years in Texas, Colorado, Montana and North Dakota while Mac worked for Sun Oil Company and then for the State of Colorado. Dottie kept her hand in nursing, working with clients with cancer, adults with developmental disabilities, and then as a floor nurse, infection control nurse and Assistant Director of Nursing at Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa. She continued to serve on advisory boards for the nursing home until about 5 years before her death. After retiring from nursing, Dottie attended Adams State College and graduated with a degree in Art. Her favorite media, and the area of her greatest gifts, was ceramics, but she also enjoyed working with fibers and watercolor.

Known for a dynamic sense of humor, Dottie brought laughter to her family to the very end with unexpected puns and wry observations. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her loving heart, common sense and generosity toward others were her trademarks, as well as her expertise as a cook. Always ready to add another setting for someone at the dinner table or help out wherever needed, Dottie made many long lasting relationships throughout the years with surrounding neighbors and friends of all ages.

She is survived by her beloved husband of almost 65 years, Mac McFadden of the family home in Alamosa; her children Alan (Marie) McFadden, Anne Steinhage, all of Alamosa and Brian McFadden of Durango, CO; as well as five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her parents, her infant son Robert Craig McFadden; her brother Robert Daul and her son-in-law Paul Steinhage all preceded her in death.

Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Rogers Family Mortuary Chapel. Interment of ashes in the Alamosa Cemetery will take place at a private family gathering later this month. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to First Baptist Church of Durango, Moody Church Media, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
