Hollis M. Sether

Hollis M. Sether, age 86 years, of Marion, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at Birch Hill Care Center, Shawano.

Hollis Martin Sether was born on September 28, 1926 at home in Iola to Martin and Aleda (Wesley) Sether. He attended Big Falls High School for the first two years, and then went on to Iola High School. After graduation, he worked on the family farm. While playing baseball with Big Falls his team won the BABA Championship in 1948 and 1949. On June 28, 1950, Hollis was united in marriage to Eileen R. Lehman at St. John Lutheran Church, Marion. The couple farmed in the Town of Harrison, Waupaca County, for 6 years, before settling in Marion in 1956. Hollis worked for a short time at FWD Corporation in Clintonville and was employed by Marion Plywood from 1957 until his retirement in 1989.

Over the years at St. John Lutheran Church, he was Sunday school superintendent, member of the choir, served as an usher, and soloist for weddings and funerals for many years. Hollis was a member of the Marion Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Fellow twice. In 1966, he began serving the City of Marion; working as council member and president, and on two occasions was acting Mayor. During his 42 years of devoted service to the city, he was instrumental in numerous projects and improvements.

The couple lived in the same house on N. Main Street for over 50 years. His enjoyment came from attending activities of his grandchildren, golfing, playing cards, dartball, Packers, Brewers, Badgers, and especially local sports including the Marion Mustangs and Little Falls Baseball. One of the saddest days of Hollis' life came on March 18, 2007 when his wife, Eileen, passed away suddenly.

Survivors include five children; Connie (Larry) Brandenburg of Mosinee, Kathy Suehring of Gresham, Patti (Wally "Butch") Petersen of Wausau, Mark (Sarah) Sether of Iola, and Steve (Teri) Sether of Wausau. There are 10 grandchildren; Shane (Becky) Suehring, Brad (Lauren) Suehring, Jayme (John) Rusinek, Jenna Brandenburg, Ryan Petersen, Adam Petersen, Josh Sether, Emily Sether, Wyatt Sether, and Madeline Sether. There are 3 great grandchildren, Morgan & Elizabeth Suehring, and Madyson Rusinek. There are two sisters-in-law, Ruby E. Niemuth of Marion and Edna Lehman of Fremont. There are two brothers-in-law, Vilas (Linda) Lehman of Arbor Vitae and Verne (Anne) Lehman of Hortonville. Hollis is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends, Harlan and Millie Loken of Iola.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Eileen), an infant son (Kenneth Lee), a sister (Arlette Nehring), parents-in-law (Adolph and Marie Lehman), a sister-in-law (Geraldine Lehman), four brothers-in-law (Ned Nehring, Eugene Lehman, Reinhard Lehman, and Harold Niemuth).

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 29th at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church, Marion. Rev. Bradley Dokken will officiate and burial will be at Hitterdahl Cemetery, Iola. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville, and at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the services at the church. Condolences online may be sent via www.beil-didier.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated.

"Our family was blessed to have many wonderful years with Dad, as he shared his faith in God and love for family and friends. We are thankful for all of the special memories and family get-togethers, most recently his 86th birthday celebration and Thanksgiving Day. Special thanks to the staff at Birch Hill Care Center for their wonderful care and love."
