Gene Bridges 82 of Collins MO, formerly of Altamont, MO, passed away Friday, November 16, 2012. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday November 21st at the Alta Vista Cemetery near Weatherby. Friends may call after 11am Tuesday. No scheduled visitation is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gene Bridges Memorial Fund.
Gene was born December 14, 1929 to Homer and LuVena (Dodson) Bridges in Maysville, MO, where he graduated from High School. He worked road construction for several years and spent much of that time on the Highway 36 project. In 1968 Gene was united in marriage to Viola Rhoades in Nettleton, MO, and the couple made their home south of Gallatin Gene later worked for Bill Collier and Jack Dowell as a farm hand. Always eager to do what it took to get the job done and never shying away from hard work. Over the years Gene and Viola were foster parents for several children. They were devoted to the children and gave them a loving home. In 1993 Gene retired and the couple moved to Collins, MO. to enjoy the peace and beauty of the Ozarks.
After retirement Gene started working with poultry; he enjoyed all aspects of caring for his chickens. In his spare time he would do woodworking; he was skilled with his hands and could tackle any project with ease. He greatly enjoyed making doll beds and doll houses for his grandchildren. Gene was a man of principles; his dedication to hard work and love of his family will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Viola in 2005 sister Dorothy Horsman, brothers, Paul Wayne, Leelun and Donald Bridges.
Survivors include his sons, Lee (Jean) Mott, Altamont, MO, Ray (Regina) Mott, Lamar, MO, Bill Phelps, MT, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
